Step B: Select the Memory

Quickly select the individual memory you would like to work on. Make sure that the memory is an individual memory and not a behavior, a thought, collection of memories, etc. Step B should be very quick (10-15 seconds or less). Our goal is to select the memory quickly without generating any distress. Do not think about the memory, play the memory, or have any feelings about it in this moment. If you encounter problems, see Help below. It is a really good idea to select a small memory to start with (not a top 10 horrible memory).

Help:

  • It is a really good idea to start with a smaller memory. Work your way up to the really bad ones.
  • It is important that you work on one (and only one) memory each session. Other memories may want to come. If they do, Container them in their own container and you can get to them later.
  • If you notice any bodily distress when selecting the memory, use the ShopVac resource to get that distress out of your body before continuing.
  • If briefly thinking about this memory causes a flashback, immediately use Sensory Grounding and ShopVac. If flashbacks continue to intrude, it may be advisable to work on a different memory first and come back to this one later.
  • If you cannot find a specific individual bad memory for a particular issue/territory, try to find a specific memory in a different territory that you can access right now.
