Step E: Working with Future Distressing Situations

In this step, we leverage the good work that you just did toward a future scene related in theme or feeling to the memory you just resolved. Here are some guidelines for selecting a good future scene:

  • It is something that is likely to happen in the next few weeks or months.
  • It should not be catastrophic (i.e. don’t work on someone dying or something truly horrible happening).
  • If there is a lot of distress in the future scene, stop. Use your skills. If the distress continues, consider doing more work in the past around this theme and come back to this future scene later.

See the Help section below for problems that are likely to occur in this step.

Help

  • Why do I have to have resolved a memory to work on a future scene? You don’t. We highly recommend it because it works better. You can target a future distressing scene and it may be helpful.
  • If distress appears, container it. If needed ShopVac and use Sensory Grounding. If distress continues, consider stopping or working on a future scene that your system identifies as more tolerable.
